Liger the Biggest Cat in the World is Truly Amazing!
Have you heard about the animal called liger the biggest cat that exists? Yes, it sounds like a lion and a tiger and that’s because this animal is a hybrid between the two. The liger is an offspring of a male lion and a female tiger. It is so huge and magnificent that one might wonder if it is real.
The scientific name of the hybrid is Panthera leo × Panthera tigris. There is a similar hybrid to the liger but with some distinctions and that is the tigon. The difference between the two is that the tigon is an offspring of a male tiger and a female lion. Just like the tigers and lions these animals are beautiful, but much bigger.
Liger the biggest cat in the world has an average weight of 1000 pounds. The heaviest liger on record was 1600 pounds. Today, ligers live only in captivity because their habitats do not overlap with the habitats of their parents.
Their lifespan is 15 to 25 years and their size can be up to 12 ft (3.6 meters).
The ligers tend to be more like lions and have similar appearance to them. These hybrids love swimming just like tigers do, but are sociable like the lions. This is not a new hybrid – it has appeared in early 19th Century in India.
Unfortunately, it is estimated that there are fewer than 100 ligers in existence.
The largest number of ligers are in the USA and then in China, South Korea, Germany and South Africa. Due to the fact that ligers don’t get enough exercise in their habitats, they often suffer from obesity. These hybrids are more similar to lions than to tigers and their roar sounds like a lion’s roar.
Take a look at this video of ligers and tell us what you think about them.
